(1621-1706) - Watertown and Reading, Middlesex co., MA; Chelsea, Suffolk co., MA

(Second Generation - Smith Family)

FATHER
MOTHER
FRANCIS SMITH
ALICE [SURNAME NOT KNOWN]

BIRTH, DEATH & BURIAL John was born in 1621 in Watertown, Middlesex co., MA[2,9]. This birth year is estimated from his given age on his death record. John died in Chelsea, Suffolk co., MA on 21 September 1706; he was 85[9,14]. John is buried in North Chelsea (now Revere), Suffolk co., MA.
RESIDENCE John lived at Winnesimmet (now Chelsea), Suffolk co., MA[14]. He bought land in Charlestown, Suffolk co., MA from R. Kennicut in 1678 and sold 12.5 acres from the second division to John Wilson, Sr. at some point. The deed was witnessed by Thomas Goodwell and William Johnson and was acknowledged in 1682 (although that is not the date of sale).
MILITARY SERVICE John served in the local militia and was a Lieutenant until at least 1663 (date of 2nd marriage), but a Captain by the time of his wife's death in 1694.
MARRIAGE #1 On 1 August 1647 when John was 26, he first married Catherine MORRILL, daughter of Isaac MORRILL, in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[2,9,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21]. Their marriage was also in the Roxbury, Suffolk co., MA vital records as "Smith, John & Katherine Morrol". Catherine was born circa 1635 and died in Reading, Middlesex co., MA on 12 September 1662; she was 27[2,3,9,14]. Her death record reads "Smith, Katherine". She is buried with John in North Chelsea, MA (now Revere), Suffolk co., MA.

CHILDREN 7. i. Mary SMITH Mary was born on 15 November 1648 in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[29]. On 5 November 1664 when Mary was 15, she married Jeremiah SWAIN, in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[14,25].
8. ii. John SMITH John was born on 4 November 1651 in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[2,14,30].
9. iii. Sarah SMITH Sarah was born on 14 April 1654 in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[2,14,31] and died on 5 May 1654 in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[2,3,14]. Another record says that she died on 1 May 1654, at 17 days of age. It could be that she died on the 1st and was buried on the 5th of May.
10. iv. Isaac SMITH Isaac was born on 20 June 1655 in Reading, Middlesex co., MA, as "Smith, Issack"[2,14,30].
11. v. Benjamin SMITH Benjamin was born on 8 August 1657 in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[2,14,26] and died on 1 January 1657/8 in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[2,14,32]. The Reading, Middlesex co., MA vital records say that Benjamin died on 1 January 1657, but the correct year must be 1657/8. Otherwise, Benjamin would have died before he was born.
12. vi. Francis SMITH Please see his own page.
13. vii. Abraham SMITH Abraham was born on 10 April 1661 in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[2,14,26]. Abraham married Elizabeth PIERCE, daughter of Jonathon PIERCE & Mary LOBDELL. Born on 29 June 1700 in Charlestown, Suffolk co., MA[42].

MARRIAGE #2 On 6 January 1662/3 when John was 41, he second married Mary BILL, daughter of James BILL, Sr. & Mary [surname not known], in Reading, Middlesex co., MA or Boston, Suffolk co., MA[2,9, 16,15, 22,23,24,25]. Mary was born circa 1645 and died in Chelsea, MA on 6 February 1693/4; she was 48[14]. She is also buried in North Chelsea (now Revere), Suffolk co., MA[4]. Note that on her marriage record, she is called "Martha" and is said to be "from Boston". In family genealogies, this Mary Bill is sometimes confused with her aunt, who is the Mary Bill who was born circa 1624 and came over on the Planter in 1635. Be careful!

CHILDREN 14. i. James SMITH James was born on 13 September 1663 in Reading, Middlesex co., MA[2,14,30].
15. ii. Jemima SMITH Jemima was born on 29 May 1665 in Winnissimmet (now Chelsea), Suffolk co., MA as "South, Jemima, d. of Lieut. John..9b. at Winesimett, M.R.[2,14,30]. Jemima was born at Winesimmet, but her birth was recorded at Reading.

Jemima married Paul MAVERICK, son of Elias MAVERICK & >Anna HARRIS. Born on 10 June 1657 in Boston, Suffolk co., MA as "Paul of Elias & Anne Mavericke"[43,44].
