JEREMIAH WALFORD[1,69]

(ca. 1628-1660) - Charlestown, Suffolk co., MH & New Castle, Rockingham co., NH

(Second Generation - Walford Family)

FATHER
MOTHER
THOMAS WALFORD
JANE [SURNAME NOT KNOWN]

BIRTH Jeremiah was born circa 1628 in Charlestown, Suffolk co., MA[3]
DEATH He died on Great Island, Rockingham co., NH on 21 April 1660; he was 32[1]. Jeremiah's untimely death not only led to legal wranglings over his own estate, but led to years-long legal squabbling between his sisters concerning his father's estate when he died in 1666.
RESIDENCE & REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS Jeremiah's father Thomas gave him a land grant on Great Island sometime before 22 October 1649. He also received a grant of 20 acres near his house on Great Island in July 1651[1]. Jeremiah signed on as one of the subscribers for support of the minister at New Castle, Rockingham co., NH on 14 February 1658/9[1].
LEGAL ISSUES On 26 June 1656, Jeremiah posted a bond of £20 to ensure his mother's appearance at the next Court in Dover, Strafford co., NH on charges of Witchcraft[46].
WILL Jeremiah's will was dated 16 April 1660. In it he made bequests to his wife, Mary, his two sons and two daughters[3,70]. He also named his father Thomas and Henry Sherburne as trustees. This led to the lawsuit with John Amazeen, Mary's second husband[1,71] when his father and Mr. Sherburne refused to pay Mary her legal "thirds" of Jeremiah's estate when she remarried.
MARRIAGE Before 1653 when Jeremiah was 25, he married Mary BATCHELDER[72,73,74], daughter of Alexander BATCHELDER & Ann [surname not known], in Portsmouth or New Castle, Rockingham co., NH[3,36,75,76,77,37,78]. Torrey says that they married "by 1653?, by 1661, by 1656". The "widow Marie Walford" received a land grant on 13 January 1660/1 in the Portsmouth, Rockingham co., NH area[81].

CHILDREN 16. i. Martha WALFORD Please see her own page.
17. ii. Mary WALFORD Mary was born circa 1656 in New Hampshire[1]. Nothing more can truly be ascertained about her.
18. iii. Jeremiah WALFORD[1,71] Jeremiah was born circa 1659 in New Hampshire[1]. Considering that Jeremiah, Jr. came "of age" on 1 March 1680, could his birth date have been 1 March 1659? Jeremiah died in New Castle, Rockingham co., NH in 1733; he was 74[1]. Jeremiah's step-father, John Amazeen, served as his guardian until he was became "of age" on 1 March 1680[1].

In his grandfather Thomas Walford's will, he received the following bequest: "...to my grandchild his brother Jeremiah Walford fifty acres of upland & four acres of marshland..."[4] Jeremiah Jr.'s will was dated 13 January 1733 and proved 2 May 1733. As he had no children, only his wife Elizabeth was named[1]. I presume Jeremiah, Jr. & his family lived in New Castle, Rockingham co., NH. Wherever they lived, Jeremiah, Jr. served as Constable in 1691; served on the Petit Jury in 1695 and on the Grand Jury in 1696[1].

Jeremiah married Elizabeth STOVER[1,108]. Elizabeth was born circa 1653 in York, York co., ME[1]. This date is estimated from the fact that she deposed at York, York co., ME in June 1737, saying that she was "about 84" and deposed at York, York co., ME on 8 August 1738 that she was "about 85". Elizabeth died in York, York co., ME after 8 August 1738; she was 85[1].

19. iv. Thomas WALFORD[1,71] Thomas died before 25 June 1678 in New Hampshire[1]. He was "taken suddenly by death" and administration of his estate was granted to John Amazeen, his stepfather and guardian of Thomas' brother Jeremiah Walford Jr. on 25 June 1678.

By order of his grandfather Thomas Walford's will, Thomas was sent to school[1]. Thomas was his grandfather's namesake and so fared very well in Thomas, Sr.'s will on 15 November 1666: "... to my grandchild Thomas Walford my now dwelling house, with all the outhousing, orchard, garden & tillage ground now in use, with as much upland to it & next adjoining as will make up the whole one hundred acres with ten acres of meadow or marsh grounds, and my old mare..."[4]
