RESIDENCE & REAL ESTATE
|
By in large, he lived in Malden, Middlesex co., MA. But he also acquired extensive real estate holdings
in Charlestown, Suffolk co., MA. Specifically, in 1652, "Lieut. John" bought 67 acres at Long
Pond from "Lieut. Richard" (presumably his brother Richard). This deed was recorded in
1667. He bought 9 acres of land from P. Attwood in 1673 and 2 lots of "march" land from J.
Guppie in 1674/5. In 1684, he bought both P. Upham's and T. Barlow's parts of the 3 acre Dexter
lot. He bought 2 acres from P. Fowle in 1685. On 20 February 1687, he made some major purchases, buying
his brother Richard's house and a farm occupied by W. Richardson which included a house and 4 acres
of land. He also acquired 4 acres near the top of Bunker Hill; .75 of an acre of marsh land on the
east side of town near Penny Ferry; 5 acres of land next to this marsh land; 38.5 acres of land which
was considered equal to 11 cow commons and a woodlot in the first division. In addition, he branched
out his business interests by purchasing half of a wharf and warehouse on the South River and another
warehouse at the North Wapping dock. Interestingly enough, he "reconveyed" all the 1687
acquisitions above to his brother Richard on the same date that he bought them[1]. Hmm...
