BIRTH & DEATH James was born circa 1650[3] and died in Boxford, Essex co., MA in winter of 1686; he was 36[3].
MARRIAGE On 7 November 1677 when James was 27, he married Sarah2 CURTIS, possible daughter of Richard CURTIS & Sara [surname not known], in Rowley, Essex co., MA[6,7,13,16,17] as "Scails, James (Scaels) and Sarah Curtieus".

This Sarah Curtis was born on 19d:1m:1654 in Salem, Essex co., MA as "Curtice, Sara"[18]. John Scales says she is the daughter of Zaccheus Curtis & Joanna, and was baptized on 15 February 1654. He also says that she died in the winter of 1690/1 and that on 23 April 1691, John Harris of Ipswich, Essex co., MA was appointed guardian of their children "there being no other relative living to begg ye same"[1]. Research confirmation proceeds apace.

9. ii. Francis SCALES [Twin] Francis was born on 30 March 1679 in Rowley, Essex co., MA as "Scales (Scails, Scals), Francis"[21].
10. iii. Sarah SCALES Sarah was born on 18 January 1680 in Rowley, Essex co., MA as "Scales, Sarah (Scals)"[20]. On 27d:12m(February):1713 when Sarah was 33, she married George BURROUGHS, in Ipswich, Essex co., MA[23].
11. iv. William SCALES William was born on 1 March 1682 in Rowley, Essex co., MA as "Scales, William (Scails)" His birth date is given as March 6th on the Court Record[24]. Possibly, William was born on the 1st and either baptized or recorded on the 6th. William removed to Ipswich, Essex co., MA and married Susanna AYERS. Susanna died on 5 January 1745 in Ipswich, Essex co., MA as "Scales, __, 'Old Mrs.' "[19].

They had the following children:
20 i. Susanna - was born on 5d:6m:1708 in Ipswich, Essex co., MA[33].
21 ii. William - was born in 1711 in Ipswich, Essex co., MA and baptized in Ipswich, Essex co., MA on 13d:11m:1711[34].
22 iii. James - We know nothing more of James.

12. v. Mathew SCALES Mathew was born in 1685 in Rowley, Essex co., MA and baptized in Rowley, Essex co., MA on 29 March 1685[25]. On 31 October 1707 when Mathew was 22, he married Elizabeth JEWET, in Rowley, Essex co., MA as "Scails, Matthew (Scaels), and Elizabeth Jewet"[16].
