JAMES SCALES

(b. 1679) - Rowley and Boxford, Essex co., MA

(Fourth Generation - Scales Family)

FATHER
MOTHER
JAMES SCALES
SARAH CURTIS

BIRTH & RESIDENCE James was born on 30 March 1679 in Rowley, Essex co., MA as "Scales, James (Scails)"[20]. James was of Rowley, Essex co., MA.
MARRIAGE On 10 March 1700/5 when James was 20, he married Sarah CURTIS, in Boxford, Essex co., MA as "Corties, Sarah and James Scaels"[21]. She could either be the child of Zacheous (b. 27 December 1675) or John (b. 17 March 1675/6) both of Topsfield. [Topsfield VRs under "Curtice" - I:31]

CHILDREN 13. i. Mary SCALES Mary was born on 21 December 1704 in Boxford, Essex co., MA[26].
14. ii. James SCALES James was born on 31 May 1707 in Boxford, Essex co., MA as "Sceales, James"[27]. On 10 September 1736 when James was 29, he married Susannah HOVEY, in Topsfield, Essex co., MA as "Scales, James, of Rumford, and Susannah Hovey"[28].
15. iii. Moses SCALES Please see his own page.
16. iv. Nathan SCALES Nathan was born on 10 September 1716 in Boxford, Essex co., MA[26].
17. v. Mercy SCALES Mercy was born 14 August 1718 in Boxford, Essex co., MA[26].
18. vi. Joseph SCALES Joseph was born on 16 June 1720 in Boxford, Essex co., MA[26] and died on 22 June 1720 in Boxford, Essex co., MA[31].
19. vii. Oliver SCALES Oliver was born on 2 December 1722 in Boxford, Essex co., MA[26]. All their children were baptized on 14 March 1756[32]. On 23 February 1742/3 when Oliver was 19, he married Abigail BARNARD, in Andover, Essex co., MA[29].

They had the following children:
31 i. Abigail - had a child with Samuel CHICKERING, 3rd.
They had one child:
i. Mary Dane [Illegitimate] - whose birth records reads: as "Mary Dane, d. Abigail and Sam[ue]ll Chickering, 3rd." This leads me to believe that she is an illegitimate child of Abigail, since she is listed under Abigail's name (and given the surname "Scales") and not under Samuel Chickering's name.

32 ii. James - On 29 November 1764 James married Mercy GAGE, in Bradford, Essex co., MA as "Scales, James, of Andover, and Mercy Gage,"[42].
They had the following children:
i. James
ii. Oliver
iii. Susannah
iv. William
v. Stephen
vi. Marcy

33 iii. Lydia - We know nothing more of Lydia.
