BIRTH | Ensign Joseph was born[121] on 22 September 1658 in Lynn, Essex co., MA[108,122]. |
DEATH | Joseph died on the road between Boston & Lynn on 29-30 January 1705/6; he was 46[49,108]. He had been in Boston as the representative to the General Court (the colonial version of the state legislature) and was caught in a snowstorm as he rode home to Lynn. He froze to death along the way. |
MILITARY & TOWN SERVICE | As seen by his title, Ensign Joseph served in the militia and was also listed frequently in the Town Records "as holding some position of honor or trust."[122] He was also Lynn's representative to the Massachusetts General Court at the time of his death. |
RESIDENCE & REAL ESTATE |
Joseph came into possession of some of the "threescore acres" bought by his father Thomas on 30 November 1679 from Ezekiel
and Sarah Needham. This plot was "bounded easterly with the dividing line between Salem and Lynn, westerly by 'a certaine
farme comonly caled Mr Humphries but now Major Rainsberry's farme,' and southerly by the commons; which land the said
Needham purchased of Daniel King, Senior, of Lynn, deceased."[67,118]
At the time of his death, he owned a 34-acre farm in north Lynn on the Salem (now Peabody) line. It was his share of the above deed. "In addition he had the Pond farm, so called, of one hundred and seventy acres lying north-westerly from his homestead and on the southerly side of Humphrey's pond, in the present town of Lynnfield. This was a portion of Col. John Humphrey's grant, afterwards owned by Richard Hancock and purchased by Joseph Newhall..."[124] |
ESTATE | Administration on his estate was granted on 10 July 1706. His wife renounced administration, so it was granted to sons Thomas and Joseph. Distribution of the estate was made on 17 July 1706 amongst the widlow and all the children[123]. |

Thomas was born on 6 January 1680 and died on 30 Nov 1738/9; he was 58[187].
He was a farmer and "cloathier"[185] and is Waters #91. His will was
written on 30 November 1738 an dproved on 5 February 1738/9. His wife was appointed sole
executrix[187]. He lived "on the north side of Reading Road so called, or
the road that runs now from Salem through Peabody and Lynnfield to Wakefield, his estate
running back to Humphrey's Pond. The western half of his house was afterwards occupied
by his son and grandson, Jonathon, while the eastern half, after the widow's death, was
for a time in the possession of Mr. James E. Pease..."[188]
On 9 December 1707 when Thomas was 27, he first married Mary NEWHALL (Waters #124), daughter of John NEWHALL 3rd (Waters #42) & Esther BARTRAM[185]. She was born on 26 April 1689[122].

Captain Elisha NEWHALL was born on 20 November 1686[168]. Elisha died in Lynnfield, Essex co., MA
on 19 March 1773; he was 86[166]. He was a Farmer[167] and is Waters #93.
He was a Captain in the local military and lived near the Salem & Reading Road[167]. In 1717, Captain Elisha joined in a quitclaim with his siblings to his brothers Thomas and Joseph all right and interest in the estate of Ensign Joseph Newhall, with the exception of their motheršs dower[167]. On 16 May 1718, Captain Elisha bought two lots totaling 90 acres from his brothers Thomas and Joseph Newhall. One northeast of Humphrey's Pond and the other southeast of the pond. Part of Elisha's home was still standing there in 1882[169]. Finally, in 1761, Captain Elisha gave all his real estate to his son Matthew[166]. On 27 Feb 1710/11 when Elisha was 23, he married Jane BREED (Breed #95), daughter of Joseph BREED, Ensign & Sarah2 FARRINGTON (Farrington #23)[167]. The church record of their deaths reads: "They lived very happily together as man and wife almost sixty-five if not almost sixty-six years, then died, but three days difference between yr deaths. Thus were they lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided."[166]

Benjamin was born on 5 April 1698[171]. He was a cordwainer or shoemaker[170] and is
Waters #98. Benjamin served in the French & Indian War and was made Captain for his service there[170].
He was also Representative for the town of Lynn from 1748-1750 and 1752-1756[170].
On 1 January 1721 when Benjamin was 22, he married Elizabeth FOWLE, daughter of Captain James FOWLE & Mary RICHARDSON, in Woburn, Middlesex co., MA[130,199].

Samuel was born on 9 Mar 1700/1[130] and died in October 1770; he was 70[165].
He was a husbandman[199] and is Waters #99. Samuel was adopted by his uncle Thomas Farrar as a
youth. Thus, in Thomas' will of 5 June 1730, Samuel and Richard Hood received the bulk of Thomas'
estate[165]. Samuel was a Quaker...interesting, since Thomas Farrar, Senior (father of his
adopted father) had been accused in the witch furor. Samuel's will was written on 28 July 1768 and
proved 1 October 1770[165].
On 8 December 1724 when Samuel was 24, he married Keziah BREED (Breed #202), daughter of Samuel BREED & Anna HOOD[165].
