BIRTH Born in Sheviock, Cornwall, England and was christened in 1628/1629 in Sheviock, Cornwall, England[1,2].
DEATH John died in New Castle, Rockingham co., NH in 1707; he was 80[1,4].
ESTATE The deed to his homestead had already been passed to his oldest son, John in 1706. John's widow Mary was granted administration of his estate on 4 February 1707[1].
MIGRATION John had migrated to New Castle, Rockingham co., NH by 1650[5] (not by 1656, as stated by Odiorne[1]).
RESIDENCES & LAND TRANSACTIONS In 1656, he purchased land on Great Island (now New Castle) in Portsmouth Harbor from Oliver Trimmings. He was granted 42 acres lying at the head of the harbor on Great Island on 13 January 1660 as part of a division of public lands amongst those who were inhabitants there in 1657[1,5]. Finally, in 1660 "...he sold his fishing outfit on Smuttinose Island (one of the Isles of Shoals) and bought that section of land at the mouth of the Piscataqua River which is now known as Odiorne's Point..."[1] However, Savage maintains that John received this land as part of a second land grant in the early 1660s[5]. According to Savage[5], John's residence was at "ŠSandy Beach, now Rye, then a part of Portsmouth."
TOWN SERVICE & CHURCH MEMBERSHIP He was a member of the Grand Jury in 1686[5]. As befit a community member in good standing of the time, John's name appears in town records for subscriptions for the support of religious worship from 1657-1671[1,5]. His wife, Mary, joined the North Church in Portsmouth on May 24, 1694. However, she switched to Christ Church, Portsmouth in 1697, after the death of Rev. Woodey[1].
