In 1938, Walter held the World Record for the high hurdles. His entry in the 1939 World Almanac reads:
"Walter Hall, Boston College Freshman, set a world record in the 45 yard high hurdles (Feb. 15, 1938) at the
Knights of Columbus indoor games at Providence, R.I. The former Boston English High School 600 yards champion slid over the
barriers in 5.66 seconds."[76]. Were it not for World War II, he would have been a lock for the 1940
Olympic team.
He and his teammates won the Penn Relays during his Tufts racing career. |
EDUCATION | From high school, Walter became the first member of his family to go on to college. He was able to get an Economics scholarship to Boston College and attended BC for a year. He transferred to the superior track team and academics of Tufts College. He distinctly remembered travelling from his home in Quincy to his orientation in Tufts in Medford via streetcar on 21 September 1938...not realizing that he was travelling through the great 1938 Hurricane to do so. After all, no one believed that hurricanes could hit New England at that time. |
