BIRTH & DEATH Based on his estimated date of marriage, William was probably born circa 1620. He was still alive in 1650, when he was on the list of original settlers of Salisbury, Essex co., MA.
RESIDENCE We currently know very little about William Barnes, other than the fact that he was one of the original settlers of Salisbury, Essex co., MA. William was #29 on a list of 68 men who were "The first or Original list of ye townsmen of Salisbury in ye booke of Records" as recorded by Thomas Bradbury at a town meeting of 3d:12m(February):1650[1]. At the same meeting virtually the same list (minus three men who were crossed out) were allowed to "be accompted townsmen and comoners" of the new town[2].

On 25 December 1650, "Willi: Barnes" was assessed 12d. 6s. in taxes in Salisbury, Essex co., MA[2]. He was not on the list for the 18d:5m(July) 1652 tax assessment[3].

MARRIAGE #1 Before 1643 William married Rachell [FITTS?]/[LORD?], in Salisbury, Essex co., MA[4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12]. Her identity is based upon the marriage of Robert FITT and Grace [LORD] circa 1629-1632. One school of thought is that Rachel is the child of Grace & her first husband [not known] LORD. Another belief is that she is a child of this couple. A likelier scenario -- given ages -- is that Rachel is a sister of Robert FITTS, who called her husband William Barnes "my brother" in his will.

CHILDREN 2. i. Hannah BARNES Hannah was born on 25d:11m(January):1643 in Salisbury, Essex co., MA[13] and is listed under "Barns, Hannah".
3. ii. Deborah BARNES Doborah was born on 1d:2m(April):1646 in Salisbury, Essex co., MA[13] and is listed under "Barnes, Debora". On 19d:10m(December):1663 when Deborah was 17, she married Samuel DAVIS, in Salisbury, Essex co., MA[14].
4. iii. William BARNES, JR. William died on 11d:4m(June):1648 in Salisbury, Essex co., MA[15] as "Barnes, William, s. W[illia]m, 11:4m:1648". There is no birth record for this child in Salisbury; however, it cannot be William, Sr. since the latter was alive in 1650 when he was listed as one of the original settlers of Salisbury, Essex co., MA.
5. iv. Jonathan BARNES Jonathan was born on 1d:2m(April):1648 in Salisbury, Essex co., MA[13], and is listed under "Barnes".
6. v. Rachel BARNES Please see her own page.
