Benjamin's mention in records still leaves some unanswered questions about
him and his family. We do know that he was taxed at New Castle, Rockingham co.,
NH from 1747 to 1784. Specifically, he is in the New Castle tax records during
1749, 1753, 1754, 1756, 1769 (with two sons), 1770-1, 1774 and 1779
(with one son). He was taxed at New Castle, Rockingham co., NH in 1763
for £23, 6 shillings[31] and was a land grantee of Tophsam
(now in Vermont) on 27 September 1763[20].
This Benjamin Yeaton could not be the husband of Mary Downing. No wife quitclaims her dower on the 1771 deed -- which indicates that he was single or widowed. However, according to Thales, the other Benjamin Yeaton was in Portsmouth, Rockingham co., NH and having children as late as 1770[20]. This Benjamin is probably the Benjamin Yeaton stationed at Fort William and Mary in 1747, as listed in the New Hampshire State Papers 18:336[20]. He was sued over a debt in 1761 as "Benjamin of Newcastle, fisherman". The money in question was owed to a store and records mention that a James Yeaton paid the sum[20]. He is also definitely the "Benjamin Yeaton, Mariner of Newcastle" who sold land on 7 June 1771 to Daniel Warner of Portsmouth, Rockingham co., NH. This comprised 9 acres of land which was his share of the 51st lot in Epsom, Merrimack co., NH originally under the name of "John Yeaton of Newcastle" (Benjamin's grandfather). The deed was recorded on 19 September 1771[20,130]. |
| MARRIAGE | Circa 1750 when Benjamin was 28, he married Martha MACE[20], in New Castle, Rockingham co., NH[20]. Martha was born circa 1730 in New Castle, Rockingham co., NH[20] and died in Eastport, Washington co., ME in February 1828; she was 98[20,104]. She must be the Martha Yeaton listed as a head of household in the 1790 census[20]. |

Benjamin, Jr. was born circa 1751 in New Castle, Rockingham co.,
NH[20] and died in New Castle, Rockingham co., NH on 17 April 1816;
he was 65[20,224]. His death notices in the New Hampshire Gazette
on 16 April and 7 May 1816, note that Benjamin drowned in Portsmouth harbor at
age 65[20,225]. He is probably the Benjamin Yeaton who served in
the Revolution as a private in Captain Titus Salter's Company from
1775-1777[20]. Benjamin lived in New Castle, Rockingham co., NH
where he is listed as a head of household in the 1790 census. The household
comprised one male over age 16, three males under age 16 and two females, age
unknown[20].
On 27 December 1784 when Benjamin was 33, he married Elizabeth BATSON[20], in New Castle, Rockingham co., NH[20,226]. Note that their marriage record reads "Benjamin Yeaton Jr. & Elizabeth Batson 27 December 1784 or 12 December 1784". Elizabeth was born circa 1758 in New Castle, Rockingham co., NH[20] and died there in December 1814; she was 56[20,227]. |
