BIRTH Edward was born circa 1576 in Upway, Dorsetshire, England[1]
DEATH He died in the parish of Fordington St. George, Upway, Dorsetshire, England circa 6 June 1614; he was 38[1].
OCCUPATION & STATUS D.L. Kent, in his genealogy of the Sprague Family has the best description of Edward's occupation and station in English society: "Edward was a prosperous master craftsman, fulling mill operator and farmer whose will does not mention freehold land...[1,2] ...The 'living' which was to fall to eldest son Ralph when he became of legal age no doubt was secured by a lease. If originally written for the life of Sprague, senior, the lives of two of his sons could have been included under a then-common system of land tenure. Sons Ralph and Edward held such a lease in 1634 and 1636." Thus, the Spragues were out-and-out middle-class tradesmen -- neither gentry nor landed family. Therefore, there are no hereditary arms of record for Edward Sprague and his descendants[3,4]. It must be noted for modern readers that a "fuller" was a finisher of cloth.
ESTATE Edward's will was written on 6 June 1614 and probated on 13 October 1614, with the records residing in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury[5]. The will was devised primarily to his wife and six children. However, he left 10s. to the poor of Upway and another 10s. to the church in Upway[1,6]. His will specifically names his family as follows: "Ralphe Sprague my eldest son"[5,7,8]; "my eldest daughter Alice Sprague"; "Edward Sprague my second sonne"; "Richard Sprague my third sonne"; "Xpofer [Christopher] Sprague my fowrth sonne"; "William Sprague my youngest sonne" and "Christian Sprague my wife"[5]. Of his children, only Ralph, Richard and William migrated to New England[1,6].
MARRIAGE Edward married Christian [surname not known].

CHILDREN 2. i. Alice SPRAGUE Alice was born circa 1592-4 in Fordington St. George, Upway, Dorsetshire, England[9] and died in 1668; she was 76. She was buried on 3 May 1668 in Tincleton, Dorsetshire, England[10].

On 15 June 1615 when Alice was 23, she first married Richard EAMES, in Fordington St. George, Upway, Dorsetshire, England[11,12]. Richard died before 3 May 1634 in Fordington St. George, Upway, Dorsetshire, England[10]. On that date, Alice was granted administration of Richard's estate.

On 20 December 1638 when Alice was 46, she second married John HOLLAND, in Tincleton, Dorsetshire, England[10]. He was buried on 17 May 1669 in Tincleton, Dorsetshire, England[10].

5. iv. Richard SPRAGUE Richard was born in 1604 in Fordington St. George, Upway, Dorsetshire, England[81]. This is estimated from the claim that Richard was 25 when he migrated circa 1629. He supposedly sailed from Graveshead in London, Middlesex, England on 25 April 1629 aboard the Lyon's Whelp, landing in Naumkeag (Salem), Essex co., MA in mid-July 1629[82]. The actual facts of their migration are still a matter of debate, see the discussion in Ralph Sprague's entry.

7. vi. William SPRAGUE William was born in 1611 in Fordington St. George, Upway, Dorsetshire, England[82]. As with his brother Richard, William's birthdate is estimated from his age at migration.
