3. | ii. | Nicholas RADFORD |
Nichaola was a "noted judge" of his time. Nicholas was murdered circa 1455 at the instigation
of his godson, Sir Thomas Courtenay, Knt.[1]. Sir Thomas and his hired hit man were granted
pardon in 1457[5].
Nicholas married Thomasia [surname not known]. and was originally of Upcott (amongst other spellings), Devonshire, England. Thomas Westcote described this area as "Uppecot, where in time passed lived a race of that name, afterwards the seat of the learned Judge Radford, whose violent untimely death, and by his godson, would require to be spoken of at large..."[2] According to Sir William Pole, in 1429, Poughill was conveyed by Robert de Poghill to Nicholas Radford of Upcot, "who dying without issue, Jone his sister marrying unto [the] Prowse [family] of Prous, [Sandford, Devonshire, England; the property] descended unto GUY [the Gye family] by the heir general of [the] Prous [family]"[1] The Close Rolls of 1431 and 1435 in Devonshire, England show that the Poghill family further quitclaimed lands in Poughill and Cheriton FitzPaine to "Nicholas Radeford, Thomasia, his wife, and others"[2]. |
