BIRTH & DEATH Luke was born circa 1645 in Dover, Strafford co., NH[1] and died in New Hampshire circa 1723; he was 78[1].
RESIDENCE Luke was taxed at "Bloody Point", Dover, Strafford co., NH from 1667 to 1672. Records also list him as being of Dover in November 1677 and on the Dover tax list circa 1680. His Portsmouth, Rockingham co., tax rate was "abated" in March 1695/6. However, in 1710, he is listed as being of Hampton, Rockingham co., NH and was living in Greenland, Rockingham co., NH in 1723 [1]. During that year, he deeded property at Greenland mainly to his son Joseph, although he names his sons Samuel, Luke, Mark & Nathaniel in the deed as well.
TOWN SERVICE Luke was a good neighbor in the Dover area. William Gray signed a lease for land lying south of Turning Point from William Shackford "at Luke Maloon's house" in 1681[1]. He and John Partridge stood surety as bondsmen for tavern-keeper John Johnson in 1689. He is listed as one of the signers at Durham, Newington, Greenland & Portsmouth -- all in Rockingham co. -- of a Petition of New Hampshire Inhabitants for equal privileges with those of Massachusetts on 10 August 1692. He also served on the Jury, presumably at Dover, in 1694[1].
MARRIAGE On 20 November 1677 when Luke was 32, he married Hannah CLIFFORD[1,3], daughter of John CLIFFORD & Sarah [surname not known], in Hampton, Rockingham co., NH[1,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15]. There is a notation in Dow's History of Hampton which reads: "Hannah CLIFFORD = d/o John Sr. and Sarah, b. 15 Apr 1649 at Hampton, NH; marr 20 Nov 1677". Torrey says they were married in either Salisbury, Essex co., MA or Dover, Strafford co., NH and lists it under "MALOON/MALONE/MALLOON".

The Ordinance Index of June 2002 also lists a son "James", born "abt 1695". He not mentioned ]so far in any other source, but would fill the space in childbearing between Abigail (born ca. 1690) and Samuel (born ca. 1698). He may have died in infancy, if he existed at all[1].


CHILDREN 3. i. Joseph MELOON Joseph was born circa 1678 in Greenland, Rockingham co., NH[1] and died in Greenland, Rockingham co., NH in 1761; he was 83[1].

Joseph was a resident of Greenland, Rockingham co., NH, where he "owned the covenant" as a member of the Church and was christened as an adult in 1726[1]. He paid the "Parish Rate" at Greenland on 5 February 1711/12[1]. Administration on his estate was granted to Gideon Walker in 1761[1].

Joseph married Elizabeth [surname not known] and they had six children who were known to have been christened at the Church at Greenland, Rockingham co., NH. They perhaps had other children who were older[1].

4. ii. Sarah MELOON Sarah was born circa 1679 in Rockingham co, NH[1]. Her birth date is estimated from the fact that she was 77 years old at the time of his death. Sarah died in Hampton, Rockingham co., NH on 14 February 1756[1].

Sarah married Samuel NUDD[1,19,20]. Samuel was born in Hampton, Rockingham co., NH and died on 26 March 1748 in Hampton, Rockingham co., NH[1]. He was a Farmer and Captain of a coasting-vessel that plied the waters between Hampton, Rockingham co., NH and Boston, Strafford co., MA[1]. He was Selectman in 1707 and 1721[1]. Samuel's will was dated 8 August 1746 and proved 20 March 1749[1].

5. iii. Hannah MELOON Hannah was born ca 1681/1683 in Dover, Strafford co., NH[1]. Hannah married Nathaniel WATSON [1,21]. Nathaniel was born on 2 December 1676 in Bradford, Essex co., MA[1]. Hannah & Nathaniel lived in Greenland, Rockingham. NH, where they were taxed in 1713 and later[1]. They were both admitted to church at Greenland in 1715[1].

7. v. Jane MELOON Jane was born circa 1687 in Dover, Strafford co., NH[1]. Jane "Owned Covenant" and was christened as an adult on 1 May 1715 at the North Church, Portsmouth, Rockingham co., NH"[16]
8. vi. Abigail MELOON Abigail was born circa 1690 in Dover, Strafford co., NH[1]. By 1716, she was living in Portsmouth, Rockingham co., NH and, along with her sister Jane (above), "Owned Covenant" and was christened as an adult on 1 May 1715 at the North Church in Portsmouth[1,16]. Perhaps the two sisters lived together in the city.
9. vii. Samuel MELOON Samuel was born circa 1698 in Greenland, Rockingham co., NH[1,27]. Samuel Owned the Covenant and was christened as an adult at Newington, NH on 10 Nov 1728[1]. On 19 November 1724 when Samuel was 26, he married Mary CARTER[1,16], daughter of Richard CARTER & Elizabeth [surname not known], in Portsmouth, Rockingham co., NH[27]. Mary was born circa 1698 in Portsmouth, Rockingham co., NH[1,27]. They had four children who were christened at Newington & Greenland, Rockingham co., NH between 1728 & 1733[1].
10. viii. Luke MELOON Luke was born circa 1699 in Dover, Strafford co., NH[1] and married Mercy LUFKIN[1,16]. She may be the same individual as the Mary LUFKIN, daughter of Jacob LUFKIN and Mercy LITTLEFIELD who was born in Wells, York co., ME on 9 October 1696. This would make her about age 39 at her marriage, however. Not impossible, but not overly probably, either[1].
11. ix. Mark MELOON Mark was born circa 1700 in Dover, Strafford co., NH[1] and was living in Greenland, Rockingham co., NH in 1722. Mark married Abigail ROBINSON[1,28] and they had four sons recorded at Exeter, Rockingham co., NH between 1732-1737[1].
12. x. George MELOON Nothing more is known of him.
13. xi. Nathaniel MELOON Nathaniel was born in Dover, Strafford co., NH[1] and married Rachel ROBINSON[1,2]. The article "Molone Family" in the New England Historic & Genealogical Register, volume 11 number 4 (October 1857), pp. 307-8 perhaps shed further light on this family, if referring to the family of this Nathaniel Meloon. If so, Nathaniel, Rachel & three of their children were taken captive by Indians from Stevenstown (now Salisbury), Essex co., MA on 11 May 1754. Nathaniel, Rachel & their son Joseph apparently escaped after 4 years and 7 months (possibly? double-check of article needed...) of captivity. One son (possibly named John) hid and avoided capture altogether. Their daughter Rachel was reluctantly (my source does not reveal whether it was Rachel, her parents or the Indians who were reluctant) redeemed from her captors after October 1762. Son Daniel was redemmed in July 1761. Daughter Sarah, who was possible the youngest captured, died in September 1754 at Saint Francis, Canada. Another son, Joseph, was their youngest child and was born in captivity in 1755[1,29].
