NOTE ON JUDITH | At a Selectman's meeting in Portsmouth, Rockingham co., NH on 5 March 1674/5, the "Widow Locke" asked to "live in the school house on the Great Island [New Castle] in order to the teaching of children to read and sew." This made her one of the first teachers in New Hampshire and certainly one of the first teachers of girls in the Colonies. |
